Session 1: Family Law Financials – Understanding Income for Child and Spousal Support
Determining income is rarely as straightforward as reviewing a Notice of Assessment. This session explores the foundational financial disclosure required in support matters and examines the various forms of income that may arise in child and spousal support applications. Participants will learn what documents should be requested and reviewed, why complete tax returns are essential, and how different income sources are treated for support purposes.
Topics will include:
* Essential financial disclosure and supporting documentation
* Reading and analyzing income tax returns
* Employment income and self-employment income
* Corporate income and shareholder benefits
* Farm and agricultural income
* Disability benefits and other replacement-income programs
* Non-taxable and irregular income sources
* Common disclosure challenges and practical considerations
This session will provide attendees with the tools to identify income issues early and develop a more informed approach to support calculations and negotiations.
Moderator: Sherry Fitzsimmons, K.C., McDougall Gauley LLP
