In a continuation of the Law Society's efforts to address the TRC Calls to Action, the focus this panel will focus on the implications of TRC recommendations for the legal profession. The event kicks off with introductions and housekeeping notes. The focus is on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the effects of colonization and residential schools, and the necessity for cultural competency in law. The ethical duty to question Aboriginal treaty rights is discussed. Topics include the doctrine of discovering law, Aboriginal rights challenges, rethinking treaties, court worker training, and alternative domestic violence approaches. The speaker shares their journey as a First Nations lawyer, discussing the Indian Act's legacy, economic sanctions, and the reserve system.
